While the need for these basic resources may seem obvious, many colonies
have met their demise by failing to provide these basic essentials for all
of the settlers in their colony.
FOOD AND STARVATION:
Food
can be found naturally in many places including fruit trees, berry bushes,
lakes and rivers. However, as a colony begins to grow and has a large
number of settlers to feed, the colony will likely need to start building a
number of farms to feed its settlers. A farm can be built in open
grassland or dirt areas, but not in desert or snow regions. Fishing
Platforms built on water parcels also provides an excellent sources of food.
If all else fails, most towns also sell food at very reasonable prices.
When a colony lacks enough food, their settlers will slowly but steadily die
off. You will be notified at regular intervals as this occurs.
Any settlers lost due to starvation are lost from random locations
throughout your colony. If the famine is severe, your may even lose
your expeditions.
WATER AND THIRST:
Fresh drinking water
can be found naturally in many places including fresh water lakes, rivers,
and water patches. However, as a colony begins to grow and has a large
number of settlers to provide for, the colony will likely need to start
building a number of wells to provide water for its settlers. A well
can be built in open grassland, snow or dirt areas, but not in the desert.
Oceans and salt water lakes provide no useful drinking water. If you
right click on any parcel of water, it will tell you if the water is fresh
water or salt water. Most towns also sell water at very reasonable
prices. When a colony lacks enough water, their settlers will slowly
but steadily die off. You will be notified at regular intervals as
this occurs. Any settlers lost due to thirst are lost from
random locations throughout your colony. If the drought is severe,
your may even lose your expeditions.
