Food and Water

While the need for these basic resources may seem obvious, many colonies have met their demise by failing to provide these basic essentials for all of the settlers in their colony.

FOOD AND STARVATION:
Food can be found naturally in many places including fruit trees, berry bushes, lakes and rivers.  However, as a colony begins to grow and has a large number of settlers to feed, the colony will likely need to start building a number of farms to feed its settlers.  A farm can be built in open grassland or dirt areas, but not in desert or snow regions.  Fishing Platforms built on water parcels also provides an excellent sources of food.  If all else fails, most towns also sell food at very reasonable prices.  When a colony lacks enough food, their settlers will slowly but steadily die off.  You will be notified at regular intervals as this occurs.  Any settlers lost due to starvation are lost from random locations throughout your colony.  If the famine is severe, your may even lose your expeditions.

WATER AND THIRST:
Fresh drinking water can be found naturally in many places including fresh water lakes, rivers, and water patches.  However, as a colony begins to grow and has a large number of settlers to provide for, the colony will likely need to start building a number of wells to provide water for its settlers.  A well can be built in open grassland, snow or dirt areas, but not in the desert.  Oceans and salt water lakes provide no useful drinking water.  If you right click on any parcel of water, it will tell you if the water is fresh water or salt water.  Most towns also sell water at very reasonable prices.  When a colony lacks enough water, their settlers will slowly but steadily die off.  You will be notified at regular intervals as this occurs.   Any settlers lost due to thirst are lost from random locations throughout your colony.  If the drought is severe, your may even lose your expeditions.
