Combat Strategies:

When engaging an opponent in combat, whether it is Bandits or another colony, here are some suggestions to consider:

  1) When your lands are being invaded or any of your expeditions or ships are under attack, you will be immediately alerted and the BATTLE ALERT button will light up!  You can click this button to be immediately brought to the location of the intrusion so you can handle the situation.  If you are invaded or attacked in multiple locations simultaneously, the Battle Alert button will remember all locations under attack and you can click on the button repeatedly to go to each successive battle.  However, once you have left the site of a battle, the button can NOT be used to return to any of the previous battle locations.  You can still manually locate the expedition or parcel involved in the battle using the standard controls available.

2) Forts are allowed to have up to 40 settlers defending it, while most other parcels may only have 20.  Any new colonists wishing to join your colony WILL NOT act as defenders!  BE SURE to fully reinforce the parcel of land where your fort resides so it can't be captured without a fight!

3) Never have your entire colony in one location so that a single invasion could wipe your colony out.  Have multiple outposts and hide them from your enemies.

4) When one expedition attacks another, the attacker can run away at any time, but the defender may receive the message "The fierce battle makes it difficult to escape!".  This does not mean the defender will never escape.  They may keep trying to run away and sometimes can succeed.

5) When invading land, the defenders are always given an advantage.  They are always given the first shot and they also are better protected by the NATURAL DEFENSE of the parcel.  Instead of the normal 15% chance for each settler to hit, a defender with a Natural Defense of 5 will only have a 10% chance of being hit (subtract ND from 15%).  Steel walls and buildings have the highest natural defense.  The invaders usually must outnumber the defenders to be successful.  The invaders can always flee at any time.

6) Always build a watch tower at strategic locations in your outpost to warn of intruders before they attack.  If you hear a warning from your watch tower, click the SELECT TOWER button to go immediately to the location so you can prepare for what may be coming your way!  If it was a false alarm, be sure to use the RESET ALERT option on the Watch Tower so you will receive future alerts.

7) All parcels have a "Natural Defense" rating to them which is visible only to the parcel owner.  The Natural Defense ranges from 0 to 10 and reflects both the natural protection on the land (such as trees or rivers) as well as any structures that have been constructed there (such as buildings or walls).  The higher the rating, the harder it is for an invader to hit the defenders.

8) Of the 3 types of fences/walls that a player can build, fences have the lowest Natural Defense, Stone Walls are next, and Steel Walls have the highest Natural Defense.

9) If an invader attacks your fence or wall, you should quickly bring reinforcements from your fort or other nearby parcel and keep reinforcing the settlers that are defending the parcel.  You should also form expeditions to go out and attack the invaders directly.

10) When invading another colony, you may find that the defender often has a fort nearby and can bring reinforcements quickly to defend against your invasion.  Before launching an invasion, prepare yourself by bringing lots of your settlers into the area and use multiple expeditions to attack simultaneously.  But beware of land mines!

11) When invading another colony, here's a few other strategies:

-Try to bring down their perimeter wall first
-If you can't hang on to a structure you capture, demolish it!
-Take out your opponents farms and wells to cause starvation and thirst
-Attack simultaneously from land and sea
-Before invading, locate their watch towers and avoid detection
-Spy on your opponent while they are offline to locate weaknesses
-Form alliances and ask allies for help when mounting an invasion

12) Defend your perimeter fence or wall at all cost.  Once an invader captures part of your fence or wall, they can demolish it or simply run through and go to the heart of your outpost which may not be defended as well.

13) Put the maximum number of settlers on all parcels that contain your perimeter wall as well as all key structures in your outpost.

14) Don't make the mistake of creating a big outpost that has lots of land and valuable structures, but none of the parcels have been reinforced!  Your enemies will quickly capture your entire outpost without even a fight!

15) When you capture an opponent's depot, you will only capture EXCESS resources that they can no longer store in their other depots  For example, if you capture an opponent's fur depot and they currently have 75 furs and a storage capacity of 125, their storage capacity will fall from 125 to 25.  You will capture the extra 50 furs they can no longer store.

16) If 2 colonies are in combat with each other and one of them logs out, the other can continue to attack them for up to 2 minutes.  For safety, always wait 2 minutes after combat has taken place before you log out.

17) If you have multiple battles going on simultaneously, you can right click on any of your expeditions, ships, or parcels that are currently in combat (and also click VIEW if trying to view an expedition or ship).  A special button will be appear called MONITOR BATTLE which will cause that battle to be monitored on the left side of the screen instead of whichever battle is already being monitored.

18) When you are watching the progress of any battle on the left side of the screen, you do NOT actually have to be watching the expedition, ship or parcel that is involved in the battle.  You can click to control a completely different expedition or ship in a totally different part of the world and you will still be able to watch the battle progress of your settlers that are in combat.  You can use this to your advantage during a battle by clicking over to your fort or another expedition so you can run reinforcements to the battle and continue to monitor the progress of the battle the entire time!
